FO: Shur’tugal – Eldest Version
Feb 16th, 2012 by turtlegirl76

Finally, after 2 months, the Shur’tugal socks are done. Well, the first of 3 pairs anyway. And there was a few weeks in there where I was waiting on more yarn so I could make a second sock but yeah, it feels like it took longer than it should have. It’s a fun pattern! Shall we walk through it?
First, the socks are started off with a slick double long tail cast-on.

It makes for a stretchy edge, but also adds a bit of structure and substance. And once you get into the pattern, you can see why you’d want an edge like that. It’s a lot of pattern!

Note to self: At this point you knit 6 full pattern repeats on the leg before moving to the heel transition and flap.
The heel flap is really neat. I like the spines going down the back. So simple. Just slip a few stitches and they stick out.

And then it’s time for the one major mod I made to the pattern. The double gusset on the bottom of the foot. I love how it doesn’t take away from the pattern on the instep. Just a nice, clean transition.

Note to self: You did 5 repeats of the pattern on the foot before the toe chart. Speaking of toes…

Toe Pic!
I did make a slight mod on the toe. One I always make. I like my toe decreases to lean into each other rather than away. So instead of SSK at the beginning of the instep and K2tog at the end, I flip it and start out with a K2tog and end with an SSK. I just like the look better.
I chose Brick for this pair to go with the 2nd Book in the Inheritance series.

Eldest by Christopher Paolini
This is my nephews 2nd pair of these and the first pair match the first book. So I have a theme going on here. There is a method to my madness!
