Better than Ivory Soap
Nov 6th, 2009 by turtlegirl76
So last Friday I teased you by saying “I have a marvelous RAK package to show you all. But I’ll need to hire private security before I reveal it’s contents.” Well, I may need a safe deposit box to keep the contents of this package in.
I’m not even quite sure how to explain this one. Earlier this year, the very witty Jaskbanner started to read my blog having found me via Tvini’s blog. It seems my avatar on livejournal gave her some inspiration for a short story she was thinking of writing. She asked me if it would be ok if she went forward with the story using my “character”. Sure, why not? I’m always happy to inspire. She had promised to send me some wonderful goodies in return. I never really expected anything. Though I did revel in the anticipation of what she promised. Well, last week, she came through. In a major way.
Yes, my friends. That’s Taffy from Alaska. How kick ass is that? And a notepad that says “We Otter Be In Alaska” with 2 Alaska magnets (I collect state magnets, how did she know?) Oh, that’s not what you’re drooling over? Heh. Yeah that drool worthy stuff on the right, it is indeed Qiviuk. (Makes note to change the locks on the condo.)
This lovely green is a blend of 15% Qiviuk / 80% Extrafine Merino / 5% Mulberry Silk (which despite being the wrong berry, still makes me think of Tombstone. “I’ll be your huckleberry.” Yes Val, yes you can.)
Each ball has 218 yards. I will have to find the proper lace project, likely from Arctic Knits, to use this for. But the tougher challenge? Finding something for this:
100% Pure Qiviuk. Better than Ivory soap it is. None of this 99.44% crap. Oh no.
Each ball is a generous 217.41 yards. And I have not one, but TWO balls to play with! Jaskbanner was thoughtful enough to earn the Qiviuk for myself and Tvini through some work she did for Windy Valley Muskox this last summer, rather than take other payment options that would have benefited her. It was incredibly generous of her. But I will not let this go without doing something for her in return. I will be knitting her some arm warmers. Soon. Right after the family Christmas gifts are finished. Thank you, Jask. Best. Package. EVER.

Holy cow, that is one generous gift! I can’t wait to see what you do with the yarn — whatever it is, it’ll be super special.
Nice! And great color on that green!
I still need to make the Ice Queen I’ve been planning with my Qivuik that I picked up during SeaSocks.
Whoa! You have qiviut yarn?! You’d better add a couple of deadbolts in addition to changing the locks!
wow, what an awesome gift!
Wow- what an awesome gift! I bet that stuff feels heavenly!
Very cool! That is one completely amazing thank-you package! (but don’t worry. I won’t try to steal your yarn.)
By the way? It’s Ivory that “clean 99.44. Nothing less, Nothing more.” Not Dove. Sorry!
PALMER ALASKA REPRESENT!!! Does Jaks live in Ptown? Now I’m very curious! (I can’t read her blog from work!)
Holy crap that’s a FANTASTIC box!! WTG, Jask!
WOW. awesome!
Wow, what a thoughtful gift!
Jealous (eleventy)
That is freaking gorgeous! All of it! And if I may, I would like to suggest that you consider knitting the Yarn Harlot’s Pretty Thing neck warmer/cowl with the 100% quiviut…gorgeous lacy pattern, and I think it would look fab in that yarn, on you!
Momentous muskox, batgirl!! I was in Alaska recently & got to hold a skein of quiviut. That’s all, JUST hold it. I had to put it down fairly quickly, I’m sure there was a ‘You drool on it, you buy it’ sign somewhere in the shop.
That truly is incredible. Savor your time with it!
Tracy in SW WA – FiberBabble
OMG. I actually got chills reading this post!! LOL! I am so insanely jealous and can’t WAIT to see what you come up with!
What a wonderful package! I got to fondle a skein of quiviut when in Canada, but I couldn’t justify the bucks. It is amazing. Enjoy!
Hiya Cristi!
I’m glad you liked the yarn. One note though, I did not work at Windy Valley. I worked at another ranch much further south (where my boss was addicted to Windy Valley Yarn like it was heroin). I just wanted to clear that up.
I’m tickled pink you liked the notepad with magnets, I was unaware of your state magnet collection. I saw it and thought “Who doesn’t need one of these?” LOL
That is just crazy! I’m insanely jealous! Lucky duck… I mean turtle
Damn that is one fine RAK. I’m too afraid to ruin my Quiviut yarn so I just pull it out and pet it. I may never be ready to spin the fiber I own either.
*faints*
Ummmm – WHAT?!?!?! Holy cow!
Oh, and I totally thought that we were going to get to see your rak in this post………..
That’s fantastic! It’s soooo soft. I admired some last I was in Alaska.
What a wonderful gift package.
and ditto re: Val!
That’s simply gorgeous. Words fail me. It looks so soft and lofty and warm.
wow! those are the two lovelies i passed up at rhinebeck and stitches and that i keep dreaming about. Next year for me. Now for you! enjoy! pet often!!!
What an amazing package! I would def. change the locks if any of your knitter friends have a spare key!
W. O. W!
Another Alaskan representing. Quviut? How lucky are you? The fiber equivalent of gold – lucky, lucky you. Enjoy a little bit of AK…
Those are gorgeous!! So….have you changed the locks yet
I think I choked on my throat when I saw those pictures. How do you do THAT?
I think you better start training Calvin how to be a guard cat!
Lovely package, awesome yarn. Qiviut is from yak right?
O.M.G.!!!!!! Christmas came early. You lucky girl. I have put Qiviuk on my Christmas wish list for 3 (soon 4) years now with no luck. Hope springs eternal. Enjoy knitting with it.
I’m allergic to Ivory soap, but who the heck cares? That is freakin’ BE.YOND.AWE.SOME. What a thoughtful, generous gift – beautiful, beautiful. Enjoy!
Ok, what’s in her blog that I don’t want my 12-yr old son to see, before I go clickin’ on it.
And yes, I’m ignoring the loot. Want. That. Loot.
Hey Malena,
I sometimes put half nekkid pics of men on there. And I use “colorful” language. That’s why I opt for a “mature” warning.
Okay, okay, Turtlegirl, I’ll be honest, sheesh! I uh, well, I, (shuffles feet) I sometimes put fully nekkid pics of men in there, too. But they are artfully done! Tasteful (as in YUMMY!). I mean, educational and…okay, I’ll just stop now.
What a great package! The green yarn is such a beautiful color.
The mystical qiviut! I assume it would make me itch. That’s what I’m telling myself in order to keep from flying out there and robbing you blind.
