Crazy Lace Agate Socks

Jan 6th, 2009 by turtlegirl76

It’s high time I got around to blogging these. They’ve been done since the plane ride home from Arizona. Shameful I know.

Crazy Lace Agate Socks 007

These socks are my sister Candi’s Christmas gift. (I know, Christmas was soooo last year) She purchased this yarn on our excursion to Churchmouse Yarn & Tea on Bainbridge Island in Seattle while I was visiting this last July. (See? I told you my family is smart. It’s like The Field of Dreams only in yarn. If you buy it, I will knit it.)

I went through several different patterns before I agreed with the yarn that it just needed to be kept simple. Toe-up, using Judy’s Magic Cast-on (12 stitches onto each needle, increasing to 60 stitches).

I went with a short row heel because I didn’t want to interrupt the perfect striping I had going on. If I were to change the stitch count at all (by increasing for a gusset and flap) then it would have inevitably done a weird pooling thing I’m sure.

A little bit of 2×2 rib at the top, binding off using my favorite toe-up bind-off. The wonderful Elizabeth Zimmermann’s sewn bind-off. Easy and stretchy.

Pattern: My own basic toe-up sock
Yarn: Socks that Rock Lightweight
Needles: US 2.5/3.0mm
Started: November 23rd 2008
Finished: December 15th 2008
Mods:Um. It’s my pattern in my head. No mods when you do it as you go.

The sewn bind-off is my favorite too – I just used it on a pair of very similar socks I’m working on – toe-up, short row heel, let the yarn do the talking…great minds think alike!

Look nice! Your ribbing is flawless. Do you do anything special to make it look so perfect?

Those look great. I really need to try a toe up sock. I have a finished sock that desperately needs frogging and I’m thinking of trying toe up. I’m just scared of the cast on and bind off!

Those look great! The colorway is awesome and your EZ’s sewn bind off looks perfect. Mine always flares a little bit. Yay, finished stuff!

That’s some amazingly perfect spiraling you got, I love it!

  6. on 06 Jan 2009 at 9:40 AM6amanda

I just LOVE that colorway. I’m glad you went simple with it. :)

    Swirly!

They look great! Tell me, how tight do you do your sewn bind off?? I like using that method too but I find that I am usually doing it too lose. Do you pull it so that it is “firm” or leave slack in it? How about a picture!!!

Woah. Tres cool how the striping worked out.

As much as I appraciate the diffuculty and work that goes into a complex sock pattern, I really like the way plain stockinette looks…expecially in that colorway.

Chemgrrl, Whoa is right, the striping ended up really really cool!

Purty! I have not been doing socks lately

My comment was going to ask how you kept the striping so even throughout and you answered it just by me reading your blog. Whodda thought? Thanks and nice socks!

Wow, that striping is incredible! You’ve got some magic powers…

I love the colors and the stripes! Very cool socks! I have to admit that while I love the color combinations and STR yarn itself the pooling makes me nutzoid… I think its very cool that this particular skein did something a little less crazy.

They look great. That type of yarn is so right for plain socks.

I love how these socks striped, and I love the hot shots of orange and yellow against the blue and grey, and I love how the heel lets the striping continue … hell, I guess I just love these socks period. ;-)

    A masterpiece!

Nice! I like how that colourway knits up.

    Lovely!

They look awesome. I love the spiraling.

The stripes are awesome! I haven’t tried the sewn bind-off, but I always bind off too tightly, so I might have to.

I love that there are no pattern mods…when you’re not using a pattern!

I love the striping! I’m sure your sister was very happy to receive these.

    Love the stripes!

  25. on 06 Jan 2009 at 5:05 PM25irishgirlieknits

I heart that colorway! And you did a fabulous job showcasing it with these socks!! Lucky sister!

  26. on 06 Jan 2009 at 5:56 PM26Kat

That’s the same recipe I use! I tend to use a 0 or 2mm though & go up to 64 stitch. . .cool!

  27. on 06 Jan 2009 at 6:49 PM27Zonda

    Finally! Hehe…saw them at 100% for a bit ;) ! Love them!
Gosh, I think you’ve solved the STR pooling issue with these for sure! I love the sewn bind off..however, I always have to do it twice..yeah, ask me how much fun it is to pick that out! NOT!

  28. on 06 Jan 2009 at 8:52 PM28MicheleLB

It’s interesting how just the change from stockinette to ribbing changed the stripe pattern. You were very wise to make stockinette socks!

So cute. I’m still getting the hang of socks. There seem to be so many variations to learn about!

    What a stunning colorway!

  31. on 08 Jan 2009 at 3:45 AM31Candi

Oooh–yippeee! They look fabulous :) ! I can’t wait to try them on…the striping is really cool!! Thanks, sis.

    Love ya,
    Candi

Fantastic striping! They even match. You are the STR whisperer.

    Love how they turned out!
