The (Cotton) Hat They Call Jayne
Jun 24th, 2008 by turtlegirl76
This weekend, the Charlotte Browncoats had their annual Can’t Stop the Serenity Charity screening of Serenity to support Equality Now.

One of the prize tables.
Check out the quilt hanging on the wall to the right.
This was my 3rd opportunity to attend. The first time I went as somewhat of a challenge from Tvini. I’d never seen Firefly or Serenity and she wasn’t sure I’d be into it. Talk about an introduction to a whole geeky underground movement such as I’d never experienced before. (And now I’m one of them!)

Illiane and Tvini check out another prize table.
Last year’s event was Illiane’s introduction to all things Firefly. Another convert to attribute to Tvini. Apparently this year she ran out of friends to convert so the three of us went to enjoy the screening and a fly-filled dinner beforehand. (Too bad it wasn’t a Firefly. But don’t worry, I forked the fly and it left us in peace the rest of the meal.) There was live entertainment (the Charlotte chapter raised enough money to win Cedric of the Bedlam Bards for a half hour set. Far too short! But yay!) and then before the screening, a costume contest. This was the winner:
Yes, the woman dressed up as the ship. Complete with crew! It was mighty impressive. All three of us won prizes (the raffle was drawn after the movie). I took home a kick ass tee shirt:
And it came with some swag (thanks, Tvini for the sticker!)
The only thing my experience was missing was a Jayne hat of my very own. So I set out to rectify that. I made myself a hat during the movie. Finished the body of it there, and the flaps and pompom when I got home that night.
Cunning, no? Mine is a bit different though. Not as true in colors as in Tvini’s hat & kit, but I can wear it. Why? I made it out of 100% cotton. Blue Sky Dyed Cotton to be specific. It’s so soft and comfy. Check out my mad pom pom making skills:
Funny what you can do when you have the right tools.
I mighty proud of my gorram hat. I made one of these for my BiL Jon a couple years ago and thought it was rather shiny but since the Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride has mohair in it, I couldn’t wear it on my precious snowflake skull. The colors could be a bit darker and duller to fit the authenticity better, and I might play with tea-staining a swatch to see if I can’t get the right look, but overall, I’m happy.
Pattern: The Hat they call Jayne (from the pattern that comes with the kit) by Tvini
Yarn: Blue Sky Dyed Cotton in Poppy(601), Tomato (619) & Lemonade (608) (held doubled)
Needles: US 10.5 16″ & Harmony DPNs
Started & Finished: June 21st 2008
That wasn’t the end to my shiny weekend though. I also got to meet up with Stephie26. She came by and hung out at the shop while I worked on Saturday, and we had a wonderful brunch on Sunday morning.
It was great to finally meet her and get a chance to sit and talk with her for a while. I hope she comes back to Charlotte soon!

This is my last step to take into total Whedon-geekdom. Someday!
I have no freakin’ clue what you’re talking about, but cool hat!
eeegahds, I have that song in my head now
“he robbed from the rich & he gave to the poor…”
It is a very cunning hat.
JAAAAAAAAAYNE, the man they call JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYNE!
A girl walks down the street in a hat like that, people know she’s not afraid of anything.
My poster’s all framed up
A.C. Moore has black poster frames on sale this week for 8.99, and in the right size. I snapped up one of those suckers in a heartbeat.
I am so coveting Tvini’s Fruity Oaty lunchbox. I might break down and buy one.
I’m kind of scared of all the geekdom, but I do love Firefly.
Hey! It’s a Lynx station!
Shiny!
What a cool event! I love Firefly & Serenity.. its very easy to get sucked into the ‘verse, isn’t it? I made a Jayne hat for my husband but I never finished the ear flaps.. one of these days I need to dig it out and get it done for him.
Jayne Hat - shiny!
I went to my local CSTS screening and if possible (which I didn’t think it was), fell even *more* in love with the movie! From the looks of it, yours was far, far more well organized than the one out here. And I gotta say, that ship costume is awesome! I cracked up when I saw it even has the crew!
Fun, BUSY weekend for you! Very cute hat! I love blue sky cotton. I made a teddy bear for G-Luc with it and it is sooo cozy.
LOVE those sandals! What are they, Ye Great Enabler?
A (wo)man walks down the street in that hat, people know she’s not afraid of anything! It looks fantastic
The whole shindig sounds like a lot of fun!
I’m a big Buffy and Angel nerd, but I still haven’t seen Firefly (show or movie). I really have to Netflix it sometime. You know Whedon has a new show on Fox next year? Hopefully with accessories we can knit
Love the hat!
Dang you knit fast. Sounds like a fun night - when you are here you can teach me how to “properly” make a friggin’ pompom!!!!
Can’t stop the signal!
did ya’ll hit pewter rose for brunch? (looks like the rail stop in the pic)
Love the hat!! I’ll have to pass the Firefly info along to sister as she is obsessed with all things Buffy (and just since December! I mean there are Buffy and Angel magnets on our fridge?!). Sounds like a great time!
So a busy weekend, hmmm? Besides mixed drinks and looking sexy by the pool?
Stephie is awesome. Such a sweet person - I miss her! You are lucky to have spent a nice weekend with her - good times.
Firefly & Serenity. I vaguely know what all that is all about, but I know there is a huge underground following with the whole Buffy/Angel thing - I’ll have to take a peep because those piccies made it all look very cool & dramatic!
*hugs*
PS - text me something funny or cat-related — I’m having a very shitty day LOL
Cool hat! I have no clue about Firefly & Serenity..but you guys got me intrigued. (no throwing of stuff cause I don’t know either
I not only took my hat to NY, but I wore it there too. It kept me warm, it was fantastic.
what kind of pom-pom maker do you have?
What a great event - fabulous cause.
I think the cause just convinced me to rent Serenity.
Oh - and your hat of course.
I would have loved to be there! Maybe someday…And the hat? I think the colors are great, and now I too can have my own shiny hat because it’s cotton! I also have a very sensitive head. And I love Blue Sky cotton yarn. Thank you!!!
Your hat turned out great! You were immortalized on flickr on several people’s photostreams, for instance: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21941578@N08/2635851939/in/photostream/
I had a great time - let’s do it again next year!
