Cedar Creek Socks

You may think, 12 photos? Who posts 12 photos of socks? Well, that would be me. So sit back and grab your coffee because there’s lots of photos to see today.
Yes, more photos from our official FO-tographer, Rip, on ye olde bloggy thing. He had a lot of fun with the socks on the blockers while I went and worked out with Tony Little.

Picot Hem
I started these socks, thanks to Irishgirlieknits, back on April 3rd as part of a knit a long in the Socks that Rawk! group on Ravelry. Starting with the picot hem, I modified it right from the start by using the crochet cast-on and a smaller needle for the first 3 rows and YO-K2tog row. Then I switched to 2s for the rest of the sock.

Look Ma! No holes!
The heel flap and gusset were interesting. First of all, I turned the first heel at the Yarn Harlot event, and neglected to bring a size larger needle as the pattern called for. Why does it call for a larger needle for the heel flap? Well…

The Heel Flap that never ends
Yeah. On EVERY row of the flap, you’re slipping stitches. So not just on the knit side are you K1 sl1-ing, you’re P1 sl1-ing on the purl side all the way across too.

Check out mah heelz
That makes for a nice sturdy heel flap, but also makes for very short rows (in height) so it takes more rows to get to your 2 inch mark. Hence, the need to increase your needle size so you aren’t picking up eleventy-billion stitches on the flap. Like me.

The Never-Ending Gusset
And why would you not want eleventy-billion stitches to pick up on the flap? Because it takes for freaking-EVER to decrease all those stitches. This is the gusset that never ended. Look how far down my foot the gusset goes.
Also, when you’re knitting the second sock, you may want to have your notes around from when you made the first sock, so you know that you decreased down to 72 and not 64 stitches like you thought you did.

Check out the stripes on the foot
I didn’t realize that I had made such a significant, um, design modification, until Sunday when I found my notes. 5 days after I finished them. I did ponder ripping out the foot of the second one and doing it over, but screw it. They fit fine still. The other design modification I made (this one on purpose) was the toe.

Ooh, toe, how round you be.
I didn’t like how the regular toe was coming out (the colors were pooling) so I switched to a round toe. I’m rather happy with the way the toe turned out. Overall, I’m thrilled with the sock and know I’ll be knitting this pattern again in the future. The next time though, I’m gonna follow the directions. And you know what, they look kick ass in my new shoes.

Mah shoez, how clear they be
I could never get the converse ones in my size anyway, so when Ajastoylinked me to these (she’s a powerful enabler, she is) I had to get them.

It’s like a frame for your heel
I love how the heels are still clearly visible through the shoe. And before you ask, yes. You get a bit of condensation right at the toe and the back of the heel after you’ve worn them for a while. But a poke with a needle through the tip and the back will clear that right up for ya. But they do make a rather fun showcase for handknits socks don’t they?

Those shoes where made for handknit socks. I doubt you could where them any other way, even if you didn’t have any handknit socks. But who in the world would do that?!
You know, those really never grabbed me in the original colorway, but your look awesome!
And those shoes kick ass!
Love, love, love your socks!! The colorway is totally droolworthy and I really like that pattern!!
PS - I totally have the same shoes but in black.
Wow, those are really beautiful!
And I’m loving the shoes…
Gorgeous socks! I was cracking up about all the “design modifications” (the toe is lovely) because I have to write stuff like that down, too. I always think I’ll remember, but I never do…
Yah! those are purty and perfect with those shoes
I gotta get me some of those!
And congrats once again on your weight loss! Thank you for posting your stats, it totally inspires me
Ooh excellent colorway for those socks. Esp. the heel!
funny how a different number of sts changes the striping, huh?! ;
Thanks for reminding me! I had left my coffee in the kitchen and I went to get it before reading your post. I’ve been loving the colors on that pair of socks, so it’s great to see such a nice FOtoshoot.
Those socks are about 20 kinds of awesome.
I did one of those gussets that would not end once…by mistake. Your’s looks much better!
Very cool, I’m sure you’re glad to be done with them! I might have to have some of those shoes. Comfortable?
Nice socks! The pattern and yarn go together really well.
Thank goodness for errors. I know it was tedious, but the heel and gusset are beartiful. I love the length of the gusset. Kind of makes a swoosh down your foot.
The socks are HOT! Love the coloway. Love the long sweeping gusset. Must. Have. Those. Shoes!
SHOES BE FLY, YO! SOCKS BE FLY IN SHOES, YO! LOVE! BROKE! WAAAAAH!
The socks look awesome!!! Love the modifications and the colorway.
I got some of the clear Converse. They just re-stocked at Journeys the Saturday before Mother’s Day, so my boys got me some for that! LOVE THEM!!!! But, since they only come in whole sizes, and I normally wear a 7 1/2, I went with the 8 so my socks will fit in them nicely.
Awesome socks, awesome shoes, awesome photos!
Very nice! After all the lovely color in the socks, pooling at the toe would be insufferable, glad you were able to avoid it.
The shoes do a nice job of showing off the socks.
Love the socks! I have the same shoes, but I didn’t like the way they looked. Going to have to try them on again. Maybe it was just the wrong pair of socks. Or maybe your FO-tographer is just plain awesome!
Beautiful socks! It surprised me that you made no comment about the fiddly Cedar Creek pattern. When I knit it, I made a million mistakes in the slanty portion–best seen in “Check out mah heelz”–because I kept forgetting what pattern row I was on, and couldn’t see that the pattern had gone wonky until I’d knit at least two more rows. I bow to your superior knitting prowess!
I’m so jealous of your lovely STR socks. Mine are once again in time-out due to some seriously unattractive pooling.
They are gorgeous, and you are a wonderful “on the fly” designer, clearly. I like the toe.
But it’s the dozens and dozens of pictures that really make this post rock. Who doesn’t need more pictures of socks? When I finally finish mine, want to come and take pictures?
Those socks are awesome! I also really love the colors of the STR and I may end up having to buy a pair of those shoes for my funky colored socks this fall.
I love ton’s o photos of beautiful socks! They look great in those shoes!
You ARE the enabler aren’t you?? I couldn’t get my hands on the clear converse either, so now I have a pair of these winging their way to me!!
Love the socks, I am adding them to my queue.
OMG clear shoez!!1! A sock-knitter invented them, I just know it. Rockin’.
Oh my gosh your cedard creeks are awesome and I adore those see through mary janes! I must get a pair! I did finally get my hands on the converse they were availalble last time I checked at Journeys. Can you tell me if the shoes run true to size or if you went up a size to fit well with hand made sockies?
Fabulous!!! Love those socks and shoes! Congrats on the weight loss as well! That is excellent!
Wow! What a photo shoot for some cute socks!! Great job! I’m glad they fit so well too! And those new shoes are rockin’.
Just how long does it take to count to eleventy-billion??
And wow - those are some great shoes for us folks that knit socks!! Of course some of us (like you) actually FINISH them too!
Hee hee hee hee! Do you think Skechers would give me a commission? And the socks came out gorgeous with the smaller needle,, with the zillion picked upped stitches and all. I’m glad to be your personal enabler any chance I can get!
Woot! They’re gorgeous!! I don’t mind 12 pics at all … you can throw in another 12 and I’d love them too.
Beautiful socks, in a beautiful colourway. I gotta queue that one. No pooling at the gusset either. Hmmmm. If you want to know about interminable gussets, ask someone who always does a 3 inch heel flap. For freaking ever, it takes.
So, another Rip question: Did he really take those while you were working out? If so, did you tell him what parts of the sock you wanted to highlight, or did he just know which were the interesting parts, or have you cropped down to what you want?
(I hope that made sense. LOL!)
Im lovin these socks.. .and the shoes are tooo cute.
Thanks for linking to those shoes. Yeah, thanks a whole lot, Turtlegirl. I’ll get you.
That socks look FAB!
And I noticed your new kicks @ SnP the other night! I was trying to get your attention to talk about them!
It was also great seeing less of you too! ;o) Wow! 27lbs!
Gosh woman how much more are you trying to go?? I hope you are just trying to stabilize now!
The socks are absolutely breathtaking! I love them in this colorway! I will be casting on my socks (in a different color) soon. And I love the shoes so much that I ran to the Skechers Outlet after work and bought some (buy one pair of shoes get the 2nd half off, so they were only $7.50 after I bought a cute brown plaid pair with owls embroidered on them)! I can’t wait to wear them in the Fall!
The socks are just grand…The shoes are too…but the socks are just grand
Those are seriously awesome! And … uh … can I borrow Lisa? I need the motivation once I get home from this (last) trip!
Lovely, Lovely socks!!!!!!! And the shoes - show ever bit of them. Terrific pair.
Great shoes + socks!
A 27-lb weight loss? That’s amazing! Good on you!
Must find that colorway…
Cool shoes. I’m not sure I’m ready for the clear shoes yet. Sure, I’ll sport a knitting T-shirt but clear shoes is a hard core statement. Did you hear that??? You’re hardcore!
I need those shoes!
Gorgeous socks! You do such a lovely job on your knitting!!
Absolutely Georgeous socks!!! The shoes are really awesome with them. I love the colourway too.
Kudos to the photographer !!
The socks are amazing - I actually like how they pooled or flashed or whatever you call it differently on the feet because of the change in stitch count. It makes them different but the same. Love it! Also? Those clear shoes are the best ever.
Dude. I love those socks. And your shoes. And you FO-tog. And the whole post. Pretty rad if you ask me.
Wow. Awesome socks.
And your weight loss? Amazing! Way to go! Does Lisa coach others, too?
A while back we were on similar weeks of the couch-to-5k thing, but you’ve long since passed me!
I love your socks and shoes! SO much so that I ordered a pair and I got free shipping and 20% off on top of it. Yeah - more shoes - but these will show off all those socks I can’t seem to stop making!
Those are fabulous! Really excellent pairing of colorway to pattern, too.
Really like the socks, the yarn and the toe is perfect. Nice job:)
