Truly, Madder, Drunkly

New photoshoot, new alcohol right?
Chardonnay anyone?
The desire to really make a go at learning more about crochet hit me when I saw Pam’s version of Carrie’s Blinding Armwarmers.

I can haz Lisa’s big honking diamond?
Pam of course had to get her geek on with hers and do her pattern like Pi. You know. 3.14blahblahblah.
Well, I thought that project was a great opportunity to learn double and treble and maybe even quadruple crochet!
Heck I could even increase and decrease and stuff. Well, I set to buying myself the yarn and hooks at Maryland Sheep & Wool and that night, I chained on 16 stitches and I followed Pam and Carrie around asking “What next?” and “What did I do wrong? Or did I actually do that right?”
By the next morning, I had ripped that first one out about 6 times before I finished.
I had decided, rather than throw in every crochet stitch known to man, that I liked the look of one row of single crochet followed by a row of double. I did throw in 2 rounds of treble crochet. One across the palm and one at the bottom. Both were the 7th round in from their closest edge.
It really showed off the yarn. The second one got ripped out about 8 times before I was happy enough with it to call it a duplicate of the first. The thumb was incredibly easy to make. When it came time, I just chained 4 and skipped a stitch. Then when I came back around to the thumb hole, I did 2 treble crochets into hole (not into a stitch, these stitches can slide along the thumb hole).
I love the yarn. It’s 50% wool and 50% silk blend from Natural Dyed Yarns by Suzanne Banghart. The color was achieved by dyeing the yarn with Madder.
I think it matches the cosmopolitan quite nicely.
But the Chardonnay really brings out the lighter undertones of yellow.
Either way, they are quite elegant. And, thanks to Cat, they stay up better with a little bit of elastic thread strung through the picot edge.
I have to say, I really like the look of a crocheted picot. I do believe I’ll make a few more of these. Perhaps next time, in some Cascade Fixation for a nice snug fit.

They look awesome. I’ve never really had any interest in crochet (save for the seaming you showed me) but maybe (MAYBE) I might be a little more interested now.
Love the photos
Oh, but they are so pretty :0) And such a lovely colour yarn.
I just found a friend who has just gotten back into crochet. I’ve introduced her to Ravelry and she’s so shocked how popular amagurumi (sp?) is - funny thing is she’s Japanese. Go figure. Anyway, I see crochet lessons in my future this summer school holiday :0) Yay
Squee! They look beautiful! You’re right, very elegant. The picot edge is perfect. Aren’t you glad you’ve succumbed to the dark side?
Luv pic #4 of you!!
I just come by for the F.O. pics now! LOL ;op
But so glad you will soon-be the master of call needle trades! YAH!!
Fabulous! The photos, the crochet, the booze - all of it!
Gorjus. Love the yarn, love the colors, love the edging.
They are so pretty and elegant! And yay you for rockin the crochet.
Hey do you remember that commercial for Perrier or some bubbly water about 15 or 20 years ago that showed the female hands slowly stroking up and down the bottle, and then the bottle started to rock slightly back and forth, and then eventually the bubbles spurted out the top and went everywhere? Your first picture kind of reminded me of that. In a good way.
Very sexay! Oh someday I’ll learn to crochet–someday!
Sweet! Those look great. Amazing that you’re still kind of new to crochet, but you can produce something that elegant and finished.
Titivate is an awesome word. I had to look it up. I have lots of titivating to do, actually, which sounds dirty but is actually clean…
You know, I have to say, your photography is top notch! Your depth of field is always perfect, your bokeh is spot on and lovely, and your model, well I think she must be hard to work with, but you do a great job with her. Plying with alcohol is always a bonus!
You have officially gone over to the dark side! How does it feel?
You definitely have set the mark on pairing your wine and yarns!!
Yay! They came out wonderfully - despite the numerous froggings.
Must….resist….dark….side….
Girlfriend!!! Do you EVER sleep?? How cute and I’m so jealous that you get so much done. Maybe I should quit the computer and I’d get more finished.
Welcome to the versatile world of crochet. I love your mitts. When I saw them on ravelry I was a bit baffled but now I understand.
Great job and the madder color is perfect against your skin. Madder is a lovely color and has great oranges. Orange, ahhhh….
Those are gorgeous.
With those and the cool ripple crochet blanket my friend Jodee brought into the store yesterday, I’m getting the urge to learn to crochet.
So purty! I love the crochetiness (industry term), and the sheen of that yarn is fantastic! Those armwarmers go really well with that tank top, too.
All I have to add is Welcome to the Dark Side! It’s a fun one isn’t it?
See, I knew it was a matter of time til the crochet bug would start hitting everyone that I knew that was heavily into knitting! Now if I turned the clock back about 10 years,,, I think my blog would have more finished objects in crocheting than I ever had with knitting! Shame of it is, everything I made was basically a gift for someone other than me. Oh well, I can go back to it at anytime,, but as I trudge along the road of knitting,, I kinda like where its taking me.
On another note I have to find the one crocheted mat I made out of crochet thread and post that on Ravelry,,,,that is a piece I am very proud of!
Nice work! I have yet to see something that makes me want to dive into the world of crochet, but your armwarmers are very nicely done!
Very pretty Cristi! I have learned more crocheting this year than ever before, but I have to say, my heart is with knitting!
are you gonna start charging a cover fee for these fly ass FO posts????
g’head girl! git your crochet on! they look better than the originals!
They’re really pretty! It’s just a shame that they’re crocheted. ;P
They turned out really great!! You would never be able to tell that a new crocheter made them. What’s with all the boozing this week? I’m going to have to come for a visit!
Lovely. Just lovely.
And this must mean I get the label soon! P will be so happy.
So… if I ever make it down your way will you make me cosmos? Trust me, today that would be enough to get me on a plane! The armwarmers look lovely on you.
I’ll be by for Cosmos, you can keep your Chardonnay! Love all the pictures! Awesome armwarmers! Sigh..I want your fingernails, but I can’t…
Yes, I’ll have a glass please………..seriously, those look GREAT!!!
And also, WHY aren’t you a model??? I know I keep telling you this (it’s like I have a crush on you or something but HEY LADY I’m married…OK) but you are so incredibly photogenic!!!
Love that color! You’re looking pretty snazzy in that photo shoot! But I’m a bit worried about you, you’re mixed chardonnay with Manhattans? LOL
You did a great job, they look so pretty. I really like the crochet picot edge, it adds just that little bit of additional elegance to the whole thing.
That is some mighty fine…hookin…Turtlegirl….Mighty fine…I did have to laugh at you following Pam and Carrie around…I think fixation would be very cool…
So, the 50 cotton 50 silk split makes those your summer gloves? You know you’ll need a pair of winter ones. BTW, Chemgrrl has you totally nailed.
Lovely! Haven’t crochet in so long - but your lovely project and pictures make me want to pick up my hooks!
Cool natural dyed yarn! OK- Seriously, how many FO’s can you get through in a week???
Love reading all these comments!! I’m with Zonda, I want your nails…and your hair…and to be able to look fabulous in armwarmers!! Those are fabulous!! You certainly do rock!!
I’ve never seen anybody make armwarmers look sexy til today! LOL

sometimes i forget how much i love crochet … and its many textures.
You really did an amazing job with these. It almost makes me want to learn crochet.
Ok, if there’s a bad picture of you anywhere in the world, I have yet to see it.
Me thinks you should be a hand model. Beautiful!
