Fiber Day Part Deux
Apr 29th, 2008 by turtlegirl76
On to the photos, right? There’s quite a few so please do forgive me. At least I’m not going to make you read to many words. That’s too much like work.
Ok, so the first point of order was to prepare our dyes. We mostly worked with acid dyes and then some wiltons icing dyes. I also brought a packet of dye that I had purchased ages ago that required soda ash and synthrapol.
There were directions that came with the stuff that initially we had decided to ignore.
Then I looked up how to dye the bamboo roving I’d brought. We decided to follow the directions at that point. CattyBabs helped me with that. That was the crock pot pic from yesterday (I was going to repost it but damn. I’m already gonna have a lot in this post.) Anyway, it took over an hour, but the results were very shiny and pretty.
We made sushi rolls of pretty roving.
That turned out vibrant and wonderful.
Cardamom brought her husband and son (and they both got in on the dye action) and her son Duncan helped me out with some tie-dye inspired sock yarn.
That turned into a sock yarn I’m dubbing “Duncan’s Tie-Dye Rainbow”. Gorgeous innit?
We had fun mixing and matching the various dyes around the table and painting our fibers.

Cattybabs ponders
Near the end, I took some roving and just started dumping whatever dye was left on the table onto it. On a whim I grabbed some orange and threw it on top of what I’d done and came out with something rather trippy.

I create a potential monster
Which turned into this:
It looks even better all fluffy and dry but that’ll have to wait for Thursday.
Once we took the fiber sushi out of the steamer pots, it was time to dry them all out. This is where I stop talking and show lots of pics.

Squish squish

That green romney in the foreground was dyed with the same stuff that dyed the bamboo.

I played with the Silver Grey dye and paired it with a washed out pink dye called “American Beauty”

Cattybabs’ awesome black and hot pink romney.

My other “dump the cups” experiment with some Louet Gems

illiane had to leave early and missed how pretty this turned out.

KnitDiva’s obsession with green was in full force.
We thank Tvini for welcoming us all into her wonderful home. We all had a great day and plan on doing it again soon! But don’t worry, Adam. I won’t take over your business when we finally get married and live happily ever after. When do you turn 30? I need to plan the wedding. ![]()

It looks like it was a fun day. I especially like the red/purple yarn and the roving just above it. Very pretty. I usually dye alone in my basement so a group dye sounds like lots of fun. I took a dyeing class once and the best thing was seeing the colors other people put together. It helped me develop colorways I wouldn’t normally have come up with.
Fun! I love all of the roving! I so need to try that…
This weekend I only dyed 2 little skeins… but one of them is self striping so there was lots ‘o winding involved….
What fun! Looks like a great time and that is gorgeous yarn and fiber.
Looks like a great time! I wish I had enough people to do something like that with at my house. Hmmm, must start scheming…
Ok, so what’s more impressive: the beautiful dyed rovings and yarns? or the fact you wore light pink and didn’t stain yourself????
Wow, great looking dye jobs there! You and Adam would be quite the team
What I want to know is what you’re planning for that awesome yellow/orange roving. Whatever it is, it’s going to be pretty.
Nice work! Guess you won’t be needing me anymore since you’re going to turn into a dyeing fiend.
How fun! I especially love all the pink/orange/yellow fabness, and that gorgeous turquoise near the middle of the first clothesline!
And yup, I knew it. You and Adam, totally meant to be.
You should definitely go into the yarn dying business. Nice work. And, I’m completely jealous of that big yard with a clothes line.
SO fun. SO yummy.
I love them all hung out on the clothes line. Thats just awesome.
That one’s my favorite! *scrolls down a bit* No, that one! No, that one! Augh! I can’t decide, they’re all gorgeous. Can’t wait to see what you do with them all. Let us know if you put anything up on etsy
I have to agree with Bezzie: I’m surprised your outfit came out of that spot-free. I always wear crappy clothes when I dye.
Anyway, Amazing colors! I can’t believe you dyed so much yarn and roving. How long have you been stockpiling?
It seems like everyone had a dyeing weekend - how could we pass up that gorgeous weather?
Jeebus - I can’t even drink coffee when I wear pastels.
I’m with everybody else - I wore an already-stained tee and got dirty. You wore a very nice outfit and stayed fresh as a daisy. You have to teach me your magic.
I’m so fortunate to have so many creative people so nearby - y’all are inspirational!
So pretty! It looks like everyone had a good time and there was some amazing fiber to come out of the experience–even better. Enjoy it!
You can make reservations for December 1, 2014.
hehehe…..so since Adam just gave the date for the reservations, does that mean I should plan on being invited. I mean, aren’t we all invited?!
The yarns turned out beautiful! Just gorgeous. Can’t wait to see them knit now!
Dang! I am sorry to have missed this. Did you have a drink and sit outside in admiration?
So cool! I am totally jealous. And already scheming.
I noted the same thing bezzi did…YOU WORE PINK for dyeing day!
Incredible, the colors also.
I would love to hear the muggle comments as they drove by and saw all of that “weird stuff” hanging out on the lines!!!
