When One Craft Compliments Another

Quite often crafts of different types find themselves overlapping in order to benefit each other. Think of some ways that other crafts have benefitted knitting. You have your beaders/jewelry makers creating stitchmarkers and shawl pins. Woodworkers creating sock blockers, niddy-noddys and darning eggs. And then you have your ceramic artists creating beautiful yarn bowls. I bought my first one from PotterKnitter.
It is well suited for holding a large cake of yarn, like the giant hank of alpaca I had to wind up for the Pi Shawl I started on Friday. The only hitch is that you have to start the project with the yarn in the bowl. You can’t decide after you’ve already started that you want to use the yarn bowl. You have to think ahead. Generally, this isn’t a problem since I love the yarn bowl so much, I usually have a project going in it at all times.
Then I got into fair isle and the ideas started to flow. After many e-mails back and forth, musing over the different ways you could style a yarn bowl to hold more than one color of yarn at a time, The Knit Witch and her husband created this.
A gorgeous yarn bowl with not one, but 2 slots in the bowl to enable the avid fair isler such as myself. And yes, I said slots.
That slot has much ass to kick. It is AWESOME. Not only because I can be in the middle of a project and decide to put it in the bowl, but because I can also take it OUT of the bowl at any time. Or I could change out a color easily.
The inside is smooth as all get out (least the pebbley look throw you off) and the slots are as well. The bottom is even Calvin-proof.
The felted bottom prevents the surface the bowl sits on from getting marred in any way. And should a flying-Calvin come along it will slide off the table onto the carpet below rather than tip sideways and crash onto the carpet below. Ask me how I know.
I loves me my Knit Witch yarn bowl. I understand her husband is planning some with upwards of 2 slots in them. I might have to expand my collection when he does. I have an unholy love of my yarn bowls. Might as well complete the unholy trinity right?

I need that two ball bowl!!!
Those bowls are way cool. I wonder if they would be cat AND preschooler “proof”. They sure are pretty.
YAY!!! I’m so glad you love the bowl! There is ONE two-hole bowl left on the website right now and then we will be getting more of them up in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the props and I hope that you (and Calvin…..and Ripple) enjoy it!
The slotted bowl is a fantastic idea and beautiful too.
That is just awesome! What a great idea! And they are so beautiful!
Ahhhh! I wanted one of those bowls SO bad when you originally blogged about it but the idea of my project being stuck in there prevented me from buying one because I don’t usually have a dedicated “home” project, I’m always bringing stuff with me. This slot-hole bowl is perfection!! I just bought one! Yay!
Love that bowl! That will come in handy when I start working more with various colors!!
Oh wow. Two minutes ago I had no idea yarn bowls existed and now I cannot live without one. That is not only gorgeous, but so functionally perfect.
*Makes mental note to buy a bowl… or five*
Darn you enabling already this early in the day!
Those are awfully pretty! I got a little panicky when I saw no slot on the first one. But breathed a little easier upon seeing the subsequent one.
I love stuff like that. And the slots are just genius. I’m on the go way too much to commit an entire project to ONE container like your original yarn bowl.
Now to see if they have pretty colors I like
That is SO COOL. Wow. Think of the rockin’ fair isle you can do with that
Very nice cross promotion! I love the fair isle one. I haven’t done fair isle yet cause I’m way intimidated, but if I can pull it together to give it a shot, I’ll definitely get a yarn bowl.
oh my, now I have bowl envy!
They are absolutely gorgeous AND functional
Ooooo. Me like the slot (hehehehehe). I store my wips in ziploc prisons when I’m not working on them, so the previous version never appealed to me. But now? Oooooo.
Awesome! So it is her site! I wasn’t sure, but thanks now I know! Whatever you are knitting now..lovely colors nestled in that bowl!
I love the bowl with slots - awesome idea!
Oh. My. God.
I wish my mum was still a potter. I could try and buy one, but can you imagine the cost of postage from the states to the UK?!
Thanks for giving my something nice to dream about.
So beautiful and useful! thanks for sharing the link.
Have been in touch with Brittany and methinks she will have something I’ll love in the next batch. You’ve done it again. Enabled me to spend money. Good job.
Oh thats brilliant. I need to get out in my pottery studio and make one of those.
I have pottery envy for sure!! Pottery is one of my favorite things and I’ve never seen the knitting bowl before…that will be a new ‘must have’ to put on my list.
What a great idea - now of course I have to have one!!! And love the Pi - isn’t a pi in alpaca simply delicious? Almost sinful
That is fantastic (and love the yarn and project your working on, too)!
Am so happy to be married to a potter *sends hubby out to workshop to experiement*
What a wonderful idea!
I’ve seen those on the website but I didn’t know if they would be user friendly. But good to know they are! And I love unique pottery items. They give the house such a warm and cozy feel.
That slotted bowl kicks ass.
You know… I really didn’t need another reason to buy handmade pottery! that’s very pretty.
Very cool yarn bowls! I saw the first and immediately thought that you had to start with the yarn in the bowl, which might be hard for my addled brain. But the slots in the second bowl are genius. Glad they are Calvin proof!
That bowl is a really cool idea.
Love it! I use regular bowls all the time, but bowls with slots and holes, now that’s super fancy!
