Amidst All the Ravelry, 2 FOs!
Jun 17th, 2007 by turtlegirl76
Finally. The damn thing is done.
I need to find the buttons for it yet but it’s done. And no, that’s not blocked yet. Hence the slightly lumpy look. I did NOT enjoy this knit. Not because of the pattern, it’s brilliant. I just knit the cotton-ease at a slightly uncomfortable gauge. I didn’t want it turning out too big for the baby so I was aiming for 5 spi. I got 5.5 - on size 6 addis. Hoo boy. Now THAT’s some torture for ya. The next one of these I make will be whatever damn size it ends up at a nice comfortable gauge out of some acrylic (yes, acrylic - I’ve decided) in my stash.
Speaking of my stash, I’ve got it all (yes, all) updated on Ravelry and wow. Thank God for the option to post something up as “will trade or sell” and I’ve done just that. If you’re in Ravelry, take a look at my stash and make me an offer. In some cases, if you want it, all I’ll want is the address to send it to.

Pattern: My own.
Yarn: OnLine Supersocke Summer Color Sortierung 64
Needles: US 2 Addi Turbo
Started: May 16th
Finished: June 16th
Notes: Back on May 24th, I said I’d figured out a round toe from the toe-up for these and I’d write up the pattern for it. To make it more generic, I’d had to do some algebra. The only math course that made sense to me. I can figure out what “X” is no problem.
First, let’s take a look at the toe.
Nice and round, eh? How about a profile shot?
I love how this toe works with the self-patterning yarn seamlessly. A normal toe would be more obvious and not as pretty, in my opionion anyway. So, wanna know how I did it?
First, you must know what your final goal for stitch count is. In this case, it is 64 stitches, a multiple of 8. So, in the below scenario, X=8.
Using Knitty’s Magic Cast-on, cast on X stitches (half onto each circular needle).
Round 1: *KFB* (X times 2 stitches total - in this case, 16)
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *KFB K1* (X time 3 stitches - 24 in this case)
Round 4 & 5: Knit
Round 6: *KFB K2* (X times 4 stitches - 32 in this case)
Rounds 7,8,9: Knit
Round 10: *KFB K3*(X times 5, or 40 in this case)
Rounds 11, 12, 13, 14: Knit
Round 15: *KFB K4* (X times 6, or 48)
Rounds 16, 17, 18, 19, 20: Knit
Round 21: *KFB K5* (X times 7, or 56)
Rounds 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27: Knit
Round 28: *KFB K6* (X time 8, or 64)
As you see, we are doing the increase rounds X number of times, increasing by one the number of plain knit stitches between each increase each time, and increasing one row of plain knitting between each increase row each time. If you want to get wider faster, just do fewer plain knit rows between each increase round. As written, it gives you a nice smooth gradual shape that will (or should) end right when you’d want to start any patterning. For me, that point is right at the base of the pinky toe, below the toe cleavage of the little piggy that had none and the little piggy that ran “wee wee wee!” all the way home. So if you like round toes, this should do nicely for ya.

Pretty round toe!
I love the BSJ. Sorry it hurt so much to knit! I’ve got a few projects languishing in the UFO pile for the same reason.
Okay, I’m thinking the secret to this is the slower shaping, e.g., more knit rounds between increases. You are right that the yarn shows off so much better without the lines of dec (inc) in a regular toe. Now to adapt it for us top down fools.
I believe this is my first time EVER hearing you not enjoying knitting something! *Gasp!*
It is usually me with all the mumbling going on! LOL :op
Wow.. I love this color and I am trying to do this toe.. looks easier than it is… I thank you for your explicit details, it has helped me a lot
I love the baby jacket! A pain in the neck to knit, maybe, but beautiful. Gorgeous color choice too.
I also like the sister socks. They show off the yarn very well.
Love all the summer colors!! The socks are perfect! And the baby jacket is just too cute (sorry it was not so fun to do!)!
I love the round toe! I will have to use that sometime. The yarn you used is so pretty and I love how the striping turned out. Very pretty!
I am so sad that I’m not on Ravelry yet! My stash is pathetic and I so want to increase it! That being said, the jacket and the socks are beautiful. I’m so jealous of your talent, I still have not made a sweater of any kind yet.
I love the toe on your socks - Math, though. We are not the best of friends.
I was just looking for a pattern for that very jacket - what are the odds? Pretty high I guess since I have been seeing it everywhere lately. I love the colours you chose - so cheerful. How you managed 2 FO’s during Ravelry entries…?
Now you know what I’ve been dealing with CE doubled! Cute jacket, and thanks for the toe pattern, I like more rounded toes! Neat colorway!
Great jacket, and the other mums will think you’re such a genius that you’ll have to keep your guilt to yourself and not apologize all the time. Niiiiiice socks. She’s gonna love these, right?
Anyhow, good toe. If I ever get back into socks, I’ll be using it.
The BSJ looks great! Too bad that it hurt to knit.
Nice toe for the self-striping yarn. I knit top-down, but I hadn’t thought of a round toe. I’ll have to do that for the next striping pair.
you must be stash busting the lion brand! I LOVE how the socks and the baby surprise match!
one of my knitting group members knit up the baby surprise jacket and it was such a fast and cute knit. i’m sure the recipient’s mom will love it. congrats on 2 finished objects!
your socken toe is divine! thanks for working out all the math should i try a toe uppen-socken.
The jacket may have been a PITA to knit, but it turned out great! Love those colors, nice and bright. And those socks are so purty! Thanks for posting the round toe math, will note that for my next pair of toe-ups.
You mean your entire stash is up WITH some to swap/sell/send away? And I can’t see it yet? Waaah!
The jacket is really sweet. I’d go for the ‘wait and see’ option on the sizing for the next one as they always grow into things eventually.
I’m working myself up to making socks, I’ll have some done by the end of the summer or I’ll forfeit all of my sock yarn.
