New WiP!
May 31st, 2007 by turtlegirl76
Since I’ve finished the Embossed Leaves Socks, and Sizzle is done except for some seaming and the neckline and armbands, it was time for a new WiP. Behold! The Baby Surprise Jacket.
There are 3 babies due this year around me. 2 boys and a girl. 2 of my employees are expecting as well as my neighbor. First up is the little girl. I went with Cotton-ease for it because I knew I wanted these colors, but the Caron Simply Soft I have in my stash in these colors is more, um, neon? The cotton-ease is much more subdued in comparison. The little boys may yet get the Simply Soft though. If I can reconcile myself to do it. I don’t want to feel like I’m making an inferior jacket to this one. I feel like they should all be similar in content just to make it fair, but I know that Simply Soft is perfectly fine for a baby to puke on. I just, you know, have a little guilt about it. I grew up Catholic. I can’t help it. I shouldn’t feel guilty about gifting a mother with a baby garment that is machine washable. Why I have this inherent guilt about making a gift in acrylic yarn, is simply a shame. I know it’s fine. But, well, you know.
Anyway. For tomorrow’s Yarn Pr0n, would you like to see Lace weight, Sock Yarn, Sweater Yarn or fiber?

Lace Weight!
I vote for fiber of course but that is because I’m in a big spinning kick right now.
Another vote for lace weight!
Yeah..ok..go ahead lace weight ;)! Love the color combo you’re using! Have you ever used Plymouth Encore? It’s not too bad for an acrylic blend.
Hey, if you get bored…I have a few WIP’s I could send ya!!
Oooh pretty! I need to get on the couple of baby projects I need to do for friends, too…
Yeah, go with the lace weight! Or fiber
Laceweight! Laceweight!
I love the colors you picked for the jacket. I’m toying with the idea of an adult version.
Laceweight is my vote, too!! Nice and summery!!
I’m up for laceweight too! Don’t feel guilty about giving acrylic, but if you hate knitting with it spring for something else. It should be machine washable, but you shouldn’t have to dread it.
I hear you on the guilt. I grew up (and AM) Calvinist, so we’re big on the work-ethic. All this week we’ve been keeping ‘banker’s hours’ at work, and man-alive, I feel guilty about it (but, of course, I also love it, so I feel guilty about how much I’m enjoying it…).
At least there are some half-decent acrylics to be had out there. It’s not like you’re knitting entire outfits out of Red Heart One-Pounders!
Ooh love those colours.
I won’t tell them you discriminated against some on content if you don’t
There are some really soft acrylics out there, so don’t feel like they’re a bad thing.
It’s not a good gift if the mother has to hand wash it. Trust me. You’re doing her a favor by making your stuff out of machine washable yarn, be it acrylic or not!
Ditto bezzie. The recipient will appreciate the machine washability of it every time the baby spits up on it. Which will be often. It’s actually very thoughtful of you to use the acrylic, so don’t feel guilty!
I’ve seen your stash in person - anything you bring out for pics will look fabulous!
Geez. Everyone is having babies. It’s crazy. Maybe I’m just getting old. LOL. I agree, 70s neon yarn is no fun. However a mother having to handwash a baby sweater is no fun as well.
i vote for sock yarn!
and regarding an *inferior* sweater … i think acrylique is perfectly respectable and practical, and makes the care very easy for mom. also, i think what makes the difference is the execution. as long as the project is knitted nicely and finished flawlessly, it will look wonderful no matter which fiber you use =)
I have a baby of my own due in October and I haven’t even done this much knitting for it yet. Crap.
I wanna see laceweight.
I swear my updates are a day behind!
I see you added the pink! Yeah!!
Oooh Lace weight!
The sweater is going to be adorable. That is a shame to feel guilty about machine washable clothes for babies. But I know what you mean - and I am not Catholic.
The whole time I was making my niece her jacket I was explaining the benefits of machine washable/durable qualities of acrylic in my mind - over and over again. What is that about?
I hope you’re able to shake it off and enjoy the gift you are making. It is going to be a wonderful gift.
There must be an EZ fever going around. Everyone is making baby sweaters! I’m making a Tomten Jacket, you with the baby surprise, Adrian and brooklyn tweed are making adult Tomten’s…what the hey?
