It’s So Beautiful I Could Cry! Quick! Get a Hankie!
May 25th, 2007 by turtlegirl76
A silk hankie that is. I purchased this at the Spinster’s Treadle booth at Maryland Sheep & Wool. There’s no colorway name for it but I like to think of it as “Joe Versus the Volcano”. It’s an explosion of lava color! Check it out!
That’s all 12 pics I got of it, but damn this size doesn’t do it justice. Please, go check out my Flickr Set of the silk hankie.
I mean seriously. I’ve not found a reason to use the term “diaphanous” before but I have now.
That’s one layer peeled away. (I think. For all I know it may be two.) And lemme tell ya. For all you people addicted to hand moisturizer out there in a near obsessive way, don’t even think about picking up a silk hankie. You may *think* that your hands are soft as a baby’s bottom but this sucker will catch on every single little bit of rough skin you didn’t think you had.
Now, how to spin it? Well, I found a great tutorial on the TwoSheep blog. And there’s always the one on Knitty too. But I think I’ll be holding off on the actual spinning of it for a little while. I am still but a wee bairn when it comes to the spinning and I don’t wanna fuck this beautiful thing up. Else I’d cry and need a real hankie to dry my tears.

How did I not see that while you were here? Oh, wait… probably the big pile of stuff you bought obscured a few things.
And don’t be scared of the hankies. I can’t use a drop spindle to save my life, but I can spin hankies on it! They are easy!
You’ve been very inspiring as of late. I don’t know what to start first.. I’ve still got your Red Dwarf socks on the to-do list. Hopefully I can finish up everything else and get started on those. Oooh the hankies.. I have a stack undyed and while I like dyeing things and hankies especially, I’m afraid to lose the brightness of the colors once it’s stretched out and spun.. But.. I don’t wanna spin plain ones either.. decisions decisions..
It is so beautiful - I remember seeing so many of them at MDSW and having no earthly clue what were for. I am sure you will spin something breathtaking out of it.
Oh, wow. Gorgeous. I understand waiting a bit before attempting to spin it, but I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
Ouch! My eyes! It’s so bright!!!
You’re right about the silk though. I always thought it was soft. Heeeell no!
ooooo….prettiful!!!
hey - we are probably going to see Pirates on Sunday night or Monday if you want to join us. Spinning and dinner as well, or lunch. or whatever. no real plans for the weekend, but I do plan on spinning. I have learned my couch is too deep to spin comfortably on though.
Loverly!
I have yet to try the silk hankies….but I did do silk for today’s pron!
Oh wow! It’s gorgeous! Can’t wait to see what you make from it.
now that volcanic orange is definitely unique. i love the way it looks though. great choice of roving!
Good gawd that’s gorgeous! I can’t believe that’s spinnable fiber - it looks like fabric already!
And yeah, keep it away from my hands.
Just gorgeous!! Hehe, you are right about your color choices lately!! Just you wait!
wow! That is truly a thing of beauty! The color is amazing.
Wow. Beautiful!
