Red Dwarf Socks
May 6th, 2007 by turtlegirl76
These socks were designed for my dear sister, Candi. Happy Birthday in one week! I’ve always teased her about her stinky runner feet so when I saw Wick sock yarn from Knit One Crochet Too I knew I’d have to make her some socks with it. I also knew I didn’t want just plain stockinette socks. So I found a nice stretchy lace pattern and got to work. I went toe-up so as to make the most of each skein. I came out with a nice ankle sock with some neat random ribbing separating out two different lace panels. The sock is named for my favorite British Sci-Fi comedy (because there are so many to choose from you know) inspired by the character The Cat. He used to sing to his dinner before he’d eat.
I’m gonna get you little fishies,
I’m gonna get you little fish
Why? Well, the instep lace pattern is called ”Fish-Scale Lace”
And the pattern on the back of the ankle is called “Fishtail Lace”
Written for a foot with a circumference of 8 ½” but with plenty of room to add stitches for a larger foot. It’s toe up! Try it on!
Requirements:2 balls Wick Sock Yarn (or any other worsted weight sock yarn)
2 Sets of Size 4 24” Circular Needles (This lace pattern is really not meant for being split over dpns)
4 stitch markers (not necessary but helpful)
Gauge – 13 stitches over 2 inches (yes, I’m a tight knitter. But there is plenty of room for tweaking in this pattern for fit. It’s toe-up after all)
So knit these smegging socks already! And be sure to tell me when you do. I’d love to see another finished pair out in the wild.
You can find this pattern on my free patterns page.

I love Wick! I’m actually surprised it’s not more popular. I love how smooth it is to knit and the springy, spongy texture of the finished fabric. The socks are beautiful!
Those are BEAUTIFUL!
Those are so cute! I can’t wait to hear what your sister thinks of the wick fabric.
Very cool. I like what you’ve done to the ankle-sides there breaking it up with a rib.
Very pretty! Thanks for the pattern. I’m sure your sister will love them!
Very cute! I’ll have the check out that Wick yarn for Hubster, too.
Hi! Really pretty socks! I think I have some Handmaiden sea wool that would be perfect with this pattern - Oh but that’s right - you saw it in person!
It was so much fun chillin’ with you on the grassy knoll yesterday! I’m still formulating my re-cap. Can’t wait to see yours.
Hope today’s weather was better than yesterday!
Thanks!! Um..now I gotta get another skein of Wick, cause I just have to make them in this! Great pattern!
That pattern is fab, and thanks for sharing it, I will have to make some of those for me!
Those are gorgeous! The pattern looks perfect with the colorway too! Thanks for sharing.
Nice pattern Turtlegirl!
Will try when I get all grown up on knitting socks! :o) Maybe you will show me how to do your pattern!! ;op
Great pattern! I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent socks! You might see me making these one evening in person!
AWESOME! Once I actually learn to knit socks I’ll have to make some of these
It was so great to meet you this weekend btw!
Very pretty Christi! You should have submitted those to knitty!
Very nice! I love the colors and the lace design. Have you considered publishing a pattern in Knitty?
Oh, these are great! Lovely pattern, the lace is so pretty.
Your sock is awesome! I can’t wait to make it! Just gorgeous.
It was cool meeting you this weekend and hanging out on the “grassy knoll”. Where’s the fugly?
heheehee
[…] I’m so pleased that this pattern came along when I was in need of a compelling project, and it’s able to be knit with stash yarn, especially a yarn I am currently crushing on. The added bonus is I could bring the DVD home to really get into the spirit of the whole project. It’s so nice when so many different aspects of life fit together nicely like that– let’s savor it while it lasts, right? Oh yeah, London is savoring it, too: […]
Wow! Those are beautiful! I hope your sister enjoys them.
its so fun to know what the obscure reference is to… My mom also loves the Cat… and how he is so like a Cat, “this is mine… this is mine, and this is mine…” Thank goodness for British Comedies!
Thanks for the beautiful pattern. You do good work!
As someone who thinks there just aren’t enough worsted sock patterns about, thank you! This looks fun!
Great pattern, and fantastic name! Thanks for bringing a smile to my face with the memories of Cat!
It’s socks and Red Dwarf all rolled into one - fantastic!
[…] And no, that is not STR that’s left. On the bottom corner of the wall you’ll see a few heavyweight left. One of those skeins was adopted by Trillian42 and is now becoming my Red Dwarf Socks. (So y’all know, Socks that Rock Heavyweight is a perfect substitution for the Wick.) […]
I used to love red dwarf. Lister is a taxi driver in a soap opera now - so bad and wrong.
Love the socks and how they got their name. Will have to try them out once I get into the sock malarkey.
I love “Red Dwarf” - the cat always cracks me up. The pattern is great - maybe have to try that for a next pair. I really like how the colors don’t get muddled in the pattern.
[…] Over the course of this full week of work and reading, I managed to finish the first of Cristi’s Red Dwarf socks. The very neat, fun part about this pattern is that although I’ve made countless toe-up socks, I had never tried either the cast-on or the heel shaping specified in this pattern. Both turned out to be convenient improvements on the methods I had been using! Knitty’s Magic Cast-On is really quite magical.. in that it makes a scrap-yarn provisional cast-on disappear into thin air– never to be seen again! […]
Those are beautiful socks! I’ve already forgotten how I got here… I blame the baby (who incidentally we sometimes call turtle girl).
I love your name for the pattern — my husband and I watched an episode of Red Dwarf while we ate dinner just this evening. I love the Cat and his little song.
Too slow, chicken merango!
GOrgeous socks. Very, very nice.
It’s cold outsiiiiiiide, there’s no kind of atmospheeeeeeeere…. yeah, that’s going to be stuck in my head all night.
Thanks for the free pattern. I bought some Wick for a different pattern and it just wasn’t the right yarn for the pattern. I wondered what I would do with it and now I know!! I love these socks!
[…] In between sittings of working on the second of Turtlegirl’s Red Dwarf socks, I’ve been knitting…. turtles! […]
Red Dwarf Sock Pattern
Turtlegirl76 has a cute free knit pattern to make these Red Dwarf socks with fishscale lace on the instep and fishtail lace on the back. Thanks Tvini! Link….
[…] finished sockapalooza socks, and a cute baby hat June 12, 2007 Filed under: socks, knit, crafts, knitting — amerob @ 12:34 pm Well, I finished my socks for Sockapalooza pal. I originally intended to knit the Red Dwarf Socks since I was planning on using Wick yarn , but I guess I just used that pattern as a rouge guide and made my own interpretation of it. I have wanted to use this diamond pattern for a while now, so this presented itself as an opportunity. I hope my sock pal likes them! She lives where it’s warm, so hopefully these will be nice and cool enough for her. I used two size 4 circular needles, one Addi Turbo and one my KnitPicks options needles, for my first two socks on two circs attempt. I must say, while I enjoyed the finishing of two socks at the same time, I found it a bit fiddly to have so many needle ends and yarn twisting together. I think if I do 2 socks on circulars again they’re going to have to be magic looped (which I’ve yet to try), or else I’ll just stick to my tried and true DPNs. Also, this past weekend I administered a standardized test, which meant lots of concentrated knitting time. I used it to knit what I think is a very cute baby hat: […]
[…] 9) Red Dwarf, using Knit One Crochet Too Wick in color #565, which is a melange of greens, reds, purples, and blues. […]
[…] 7:33am and I gotta get to work soon. I think this is what may become my very own pair of Red Dwarf Socks. You know, I don’t own a pair of either of the socks I’ve designed? I need to rectify […]
[…] come across this pattern before so it’s not exactly new, but I thought I’d post these Red Dwarf Socks because I found a beautiful example […]
I was looking for an anklet pattern for Cascade Fixation on Ravelry and found not only the anklet pattern you made, but two different “Red Dwarf” sock patterns. I *had* to look it up to see if you named it for one of my favorite shows. It seems you did.
Smegging brilliant!
